Top tips on surgery!
Before Surgery
After Surgery
- ASK!! Before your Operation, you will have a 'Pre operation assesment' at the hospital where you meet with your surgeon, doctors and HCA's to prepare you. They know all about the operation, so take the time to ask and put your mind at rest.
- Prepare an overnight bag just in case- Even if they say you will be discharged the same day, as you never know what might happen.
- Don't google and YouTube pictures of what your operation will look like, as you will only scare yourself.
- Adapt for time after surgery, to save you the stress after. So make sure you give your work/school enough notice so they can sort out things for your time off and it's not sprung on you or them.
- Make sure somebody is there to look after you (This is dependant on surgery). If you're losing any kind of independence, then make sure somebody is there to help you out.
- Treat yourself! Buy some new slippers, a blanket or a robe? The more comfortable you are whilst in hospital, the happier you will feel!
After Surgery
- Let people help! It really sucks to lose your independence at any age, but especially if you're like me and love their freedom.... You can't do it on your own, so just accept the help and suck it up.
- Set realistic goals for your recovery, so you aren't over doing it or under doing it.
- Relax! You won't recover if you over do it and land yourself back at square 1.
- Try your best- nobody can ask anymore of you than that!
- Everyone is different and will struggle/make progress in different areas, so don't compare yourself too much. However looking at other peoples progress can be encouraging and motivating.
- Take painkillers before it gets really bad, not after!
- If you're house bound/bed bound, then use this time wisely! Read a new book, research an exciting project, do some DIY projects etc.. It's highly unlikely you will get this much free time again in your working life.
- People will be helping you out and offering their support, so make sure you show them you're thankful!
